Peneda-Gerês

Portugal’s only national park

Created in 1971, Peneda-Gerês is Portugal’s only national park. It covers a great arc of granite mountains along the Spanish border, with oak and holly woods, clear rivers and waterfalls, and villages where life still moves to old rhythms.

Wild Garrano ponies graze the uplands, and the hórreo-like granaries of Soajo and Lindoso stand on their rocky threshing floors. The Roman road known as the Geira crosses the park with its milestones. It is an ideal contrast to Braga’s churches: bring boots, a swimsuit in summer, and a sense of adventure.
