Where to stay in Braga

The best areas, what you can expect to pay, and sixteen real places to sleep.

Which area is right for you?

The historic centre, around the Sé and Rua do Souto, is the natural choice for a first visit. You can walk to most sights, restaurants and bars, and the train station is close. Rooms can be small, and parking is limited.

Bom Jesus, on the hill, suits couples and anyone wanting views, woods and calm. You will need a car, a taxi or a bus to get into the city, but evenings up here are peaceful once the day visitors leave.

Beyond the centre, near the ring road, the big modern hotels work well for drivers, business travellers and anyone heading on to Gerês. Guimarães is a fine alternative base, and some travellers keep a night or two for Gerês.

When to book

Book months ahead for Holy Week and two or three weeks ahead for São João or summer weekends. At other times, you can often book a week or two out.

Practical notes

The price bands above are rough guides for shoulder season. Expect to pay well above them in Holy Week and less in winter. Check cancellation terms carefully if you are booking for Easter, ask about parking if you are driving and check how far a Bom Jesus hotel is from the nearest bus stop. Portuguese towns may charge a small tourist tax, which is usually paid at the hotel.

Where to stay: FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Braga?

The historic centre, close to the Sé, for most first-time visitors. Everything is on foot, and the station is close.

Should I stay at Bom Jesus?

If you want quiet and views, and do not mind travelling into town in the evening. It is lovely, but not ideal without a car.

How much does a hotel in Braga cost?

A reasonable mid-range double is often around €70–150 a night, depending on the season. Holy Week costs noticeably more.

Should I stay in Braga or Porto?

Porto has more to do, while Braga is calmer and often cheaper. Many visitors do both: two or three nights in Porto and one or two here.

Is there free parking?

Rarely in the old centre. Some hotels outside the centre, and the hill hotels, offer parking. Check each listing.

Where should I stay for Holy Week?

As close to the Sé as you can. The processions pass through the old streets, and you will want to walk back afterwards.
