The short answer
May, June and September offer the best mix of mild weather and long days. Holy Week is the most memorable time to come, but also the busiest. Avoid nothing outright: even a wet winter weekend in Braga has its charm, as long as you pack for it.
The climate
The Minho is the wettest part of mainland Portugal, which is why it is so green. Atlantic fronts bring most of the rain between October and April. Summers are warm and fairly dry, with afternoons that sometimes pass 30 °C. Winters are mild, but damp and cool.
| Season | Weather | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| March–May | Mild, showers, very green | Holy Week, gardens, walking | Hotel prices at Easter |
| June–August | Warm and mostly dry | São João, Gerês, swimming | Hot afternoons on the stairway |
| September–October | Warm, then cooler | Grape harvest, walking | Rain returns in October |
| November–February | Cool and often wet | Quiet museums, low prices | Short days, slippery granite |
Festivals to plan around
Semana Santa moves with Easter: Easter Sunday falls on 28 March in 2027 and 16 April in 2028. Book your hotel months in advance. Braga Romana usually takes place in late May. São João reaches its peak on the night of 23 to 24 June, with crowds, music and a fun fair. Noite Branca usually falls in early September.
Best time for day trips
For Peneda-Gerês, late spring has the fullest waterfalls and summer the best swimming. Autumn colour can be lovely, and the park can be very crowded on hot August weekends. For Vinho Verde, the harvest generally runs around September.
Time of day at Bom Jesus
Go early or in the late afternoon. The light on the stairway is softer, and the tour coaches from Porto tend to arrive in the middle of the day. See our Bom Jesus guide for more.
