Sameiro Sanctuary

The Marian shrine above the city

Above Bom Jesus, near the top of the hill, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sameiro is one of the largest Marian shrines in Portugal. Devotion here dates from the 1860s, when a monument to the Immaculate Conception was built on the summit. A great church and dome gradually followed.

Few people come here for the architecture alone. They come for the views, which reach the whole of the Braga valley and, on a clear day, far beyond. It is also noticeably quieter than Bom Jesus, except on the big pilgrimage days of the summer.

Insider tips

  • Come towards sunset for the best light over the valley.
  • It can be windy and cooler than the city, so bring a layer.
